THE EAGLES ARE MOVING ON! With a 24-14 victory over the Mentor Cardinals, the St. Edward football team took home the regional championship and earned a spot in the state semifinal game this Friday!

On both sides of the ball, the Eagles came out ready to play, jumping to a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, Mentor didn’t go away; they blocked an Eagle punt midway through the second quarter and scored on that ensuing drive to cut the lead to 10-7. Right before halftime, the Cardinals drove into Eagle territory and attempted a field goal to even the score. Fortunately for the Eagles, the kick was no good; this miss proved to be crucial at the end of the game.

Being in the locker room at halftime, I saw the determination of the Eagles to win this game; the players and coaches alike were fired up, as they knew we could come out on top. That energy was certainly carried into the second half, as the Eagles took over the game from there. Holding Mentor to only three possessions in the whole second half, the Eagles constructed two long touchdown drives to go up 24-7 with about five minutes left in the game. Mentor quickly responded with a touchdown, but it was too little too late, as the Eagles were still up two scores. The Eagles then were able to keep the ball and run the clock out to win the game.

What a night for Eagles fans! Many braved the cold at Euclid Stadium to cheer on the Eagles, including the student section, which was really fired up! Coach Lombardo contributed to this energy with his postgame speech (see video here). Hopefully, these fans and more will come down to Mansfield this Friday at 7 P.M. to root for the Eagles in the state semifinal vs. Powell Olentangy Liberty, the region 2 champions. Let’s keep rolling Eagles!

GO EAGLES!
