An Oscar Night of Shockers by Aidan McIntyre ’16
March 10, 2016
We’ve had a great string of Oscars the past couple years and this one may have been the most exciting of them all. It was unpredictable, provocative (thanks largely to Chris Rock), and (only some of the time) satisfying. 17 of my 24 predictions were correct, three down from my average. I got six out of the top eight correct.
The two that I missed were total shockers. Sly Stallone has been the assumed winner in the Supporting Actor category since as far back as December, but Mark Rylance snuck in a surprise victory, to the dismay of a majority of viewers and tweeters.
The biggest award of the night was the biggest shocker, though. Spotlight took Best Picture seemingly against all the odds. All the major precursor awards went to The Revenant (save the Producers’ Guild of America, which awarded The Big Short). I had Spotlight as the third most likely film to win Best Picture, but it pulled it off!
In the other categories, everything followed suit with what was expected. Leo finally won, Iñárritu repeated, Brie Larson took home a much deserved trophy, Vikander was victorious, and Spotlight and The Big Short were awarded in the Screenplay categories. Below is a summary of the major categories of the night:
