Fire Up Monday (No. 11)

A busy weekend of basketball highlights this past weekend of Eagle Athletics. The hoopsters took on two top-10 teams in the state on back to back nights. On Friday, the Eagles traveled down to the Lebron James Arena to take on St. Vincent-St. Mary, the #7 team in last week’s AP poll.
Coming off of a tough loss to St. Ignatius, the Eagles were motivated to get a huge bounce-back win against the top team in Northeast Ohio. It has been several years since the Eagles were able to pull off a win at their place, and unfortunately, that streak continued as the St. Edward basketball team fell 78-64.
The Fighting Irish of STVM came out ready to play, and they held a consistent ten point lead the entire game. When the Eagles tried to cut the lead, St. V responded with a score. The Eagles worked hard to bring the game closer but just could not get the best of St. Vincent-St. Mary.
A two-game losing skid is tough to swallow for a team like St. Edward; however, being able to deal with adversity is an essential part of team development.
The Eagles did a complete 180 the next night when Toledo Whitmer came to visit for a showdown in the Eagle’s Nest. Whitmer came out of the gate on fire, as they nailed several threes to take a 19-11 lead at the end of the first. However, the Eagles were not deterred. Grant Huffman and Tae Tae Blanton led the way on offense and gave the Eagles a 29-27 lead at the half.
Another great half of basketball led to a 65-51 victory against the #8 team in the state. The Eagles responded to a 14-point defeat the previous night by earning a 14-point win! What a turnover and great bounce-back win for the St. Edward basketball team.
From the bench, I saw solid contribution and energy from all of the Eagles, and this is what led us to a victory. We need to continue to play as a team and improve on being able to respond to being down. Hopefully, the Eagles can build on this momentum as we close out the regular season this week and head into the playoffs.
GO EAGLES!
