Eagles Participate in Science Olympiad

On February 15th, several students woke up early to make the trek over to the annual Mentor Science Olympiad Invitational. This is one of the biggest Science Olympiad events of the year, attracting powerhouse schools from all over, including state championship teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, as well as recent national championship teams. In total, 51 teams competed in 23 different events ranging from test-oriented competitions dealing with subjects such as astronomy or material science, to build-oriented competitions in which students show off their contraptions to complete a certain task.

Despite the stiff competition, St. Edward managed to pull off a respectable 26th overall placing.
“The special thing about Science Olympiad is that it provides the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and continually improve. The friendly, collaborative environment is incredible. After we completely failed at the Bungee Drop event, a moderator from Nordonia gave us some really useful pointers on how to collect and organize our data.” (a student)
The eagles will need to bring their A-game to the next invitational, the regional competition, at LCCC on March 8th. The top eight overall teams at regionals qualify for a spot in the state championship in April.
