Their hearts race. Their feet glide and pounce along the ground, flying towards their positions punctually yet steadily. They struggle to keep masses of brass, metal, and wood in the air. But in spite of their hardships, they march towards victory.
This past weekend, the St.Edward Marching Eagles attended their second OMEA Marching Band Competition at Perkins High School in Sandusky, taking best general effect and music in their class, best band in their class, and reserve grand champions in both percussion and overall band performance. The previous weekend, the Marching Eagles competed in their first competition at Nordonia High School, taking best percussion, color guard, visuals, music, and second in their class.
And at each competition, the band earned a superior rating of a one, qualifying them for the OMEA Marching Band two weeks in a row.
This year, the marching band expresses great pride in their competition show, entitled “Restless Night.” Junior Joe Basalla says that: “This year’s show is unique in that it highlights a feeling we all have experienced, not being able to sleep, except we have put our own touch to it highlighting the talents of various band members. Because of this, I feel we have a much more personal connection to the show that other bands don’t necessarily have.”
This Saturday, the marching band will compete for the third weekend in a row in Warsaw, Ohio. Afterwards, they will be performing their show at the St. Edward – St. Ignatius football game.
