Over the weekend, the Saint Ed’s Crew team had a strong representation at their only home regatta, the 29th annual Head of the Cuyahoga. With the team bringing home 7 medals out of 11 entries, it’s safe to say that Saint Ed’s is proving themselves on the water.
Starting off the morning strong, the Novice 8+ “A” crew came in 3rd place, beating both of Saint Ignatius’s entries. This crew was the first to race in our new black shell! The boat that placed third was raced by the following Edsmen – Evan Smith, Frank Del Regno, Sam Mace, Alex Orsky, Nathan Chilcote, Michael Twardzik, Landan Kirby, Daniel Kleinhenz (2.0), Weston Murdoch. Congrats to this boat, continuing the Freshman Legacy!
The next medal on the day was the Men’s Youth 8+ (1v), with a 2nd place finish. The Eagles only sit 11 seconds behind first place. The lineup of these Edsmen was the following – Isaac Traud, Liam McConnell, Nate Miller, Matthew Bush, Will Nowak, Jack (John) Kolencik, Jacob Sidor, August Marcellino, and Noah Stachnik. Good work Eagles.
Next up was the Men’s Youth 2nd 8+ (2v), which also gained a 2nd place finish. The lineup consisted of – Elliott Wooten, Aiden Clovesko, Aiden Shulze-Newkirk, Rylan Smith, Ted Alten, Caden Polk, Peter Kolecky, Colin Dempsey, and Seb Diaz. Keep it up!
The Men’s Youth 3rd 8+ (3v) earned a respective 3rd place medal. Their lineup consisted of – Alex Colon, Doyle Papp, Harrison Prementine, David Barahona, Ben Tomak, Ethan House, Evan Lochner, Aaron Kleinhenz, and Kellen Wamelink. Congrats to these athletes.
The Men’s Open Novice 8+ (5v) also gained a 3rd place medal, racing against collegiate boats! This crew had a mix of both Varsity, and Novice Athletes. The lineup of this boat – Enzo Carontini, Logan Malloy, Christian Bedell, Jack Merriman, Barrett Jucaitis, Frank Del Regno, Landan Kirby, Daniel Kleinhenz, and Michael Twardzik. Go Eagles.
Our only 4 to medal on the day was the Men’s Varsity 4+ (1v4). These athletes placed 3rd out of 14 boats. This crew had a tight battle against an Ignatius 4, racing side by side with them for about the last 1k meters of the race. The Eagles proved strong, and beat them in the end. The athletes were as follows – Elliott Wooten, Nate Miller, Liam McConnell, Will Nowak, and August Marcellino.
Our last event of the day came with a Gold Medal! The Men’s Youth 4x came in strong, 40 seconds ahead of the 2nd place finisher, Westerville. These athletes tried something new, with this being Saint Ed’s first ever quad to race at a regatta. For those unaware, a quad uses 2 oars for one rower, which is called “sculling”; Ed’s mainly focuses on “sweep” rowing, which gives each rower only one oar. The lineup consisted of – Jack (John) Kolencik, Matthew Bush, Noah Stachnik, and Rylan Smith. These seniors completed their last HOTC out with a bang.
We also had both Parents and Coaches racing in different events this race – shoutout to Coach Rickman and Coach Steven for their 1st place finish in the Men’s Masters 8+, and to the moms in the Women’s Open Novice 8+ with a 2nd place finish!
Thanks to all coaches, parents, teachers, and friends who came down to support the Eagle Navy this weekend! The Eagles’s next regatta is the Heron Henley, which will take place in Michigan in 2 weeks. If you see a rower, make sure to wish them luck.
