A Bright Future
Cavs’ Youngsters Shine With The Absences of Star Players
Three Cavaliers starters were missing over the recent holiday break, including the likes of Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Donovan Mitchell (who was out with an illness). Over a stretch of five games from December 18 – December 27, the Cavaliers won four, including an impressive 20-point comeback against the Dallas Mavericks and an overtime victory over the Houston Rockets.
One of the first names to stand out over this recent holiday break was the “Magic Mormon” Sam Merrill, who put up 19 points off the bench against the Rockets and followed that game with a career-high 27 points, leading the Cavs to a 124-116 victory over the Utah Jazz. He has become a true three-point merchant, and since the winter break, Merrill has found his way towards more common minutes, even with the return of Donovan Mitchell.
CPJ, Craig Porter Junior, has also made his presence known with the absence of his main guards. He put up 19 points, 7 boards, and 8 assists in a quality win over the Chicago Bulls. He too has an exciting future, boasting a high quality mid-range jumper and a noticeable defensive workrate.
More long term NBA members took up large roles during the absence of the Cavs’ stars as well. Jarrett Allen and Max Strus put up big numbers over the holiday break and even long time Cavalier and NBA Veteran Tristan Thompson had some meaningful minutes.
So what does this tell us?
This Cavs team has DEPTH. Far more than last years. The addition of players like Sam Merrill, Max Strus, and Craig Porter Junior will be significant for this young Cavs team, as they bring great talent and versatility. Players like George Niang and Tristan Thompson also add experience to the team and can be leaders for the Cavs if they are to make a playoff run. The hopes of the playoffs are growing as well. Since the return of Donovan Mitchell, the Cavs are 4-2, including a huge win overseas in Paris Thursday night. In that game Mitchell dropped 45 points, leading the Cavliers to a 111-102 win over the Brooklyn Nets. With the return of Garland nearing, the Cavaliers have a chance to take their game to the next level with their newfound depth. Only time will tell how the Cavs can utilize their weapons, and how deep of a playoff run they will make.
