Over the last 10 years, Saint Edward High school has lost every soccer game against St Ignatius. Sure some have been close bur for the majority Iggy has blown out Eds every time. This has turned into an ideology that Ignatius is unbeatable. Will it be the same for this season or will St. Eds finally rain victorious over the cats.
The Eagles have had a hard season so far, but this could be the turning point. The game started began with some much enthusiasm. The eagles having nothing to lose but wanting to walk away with it all, whereas the cats had all the pressure on them. With in the first 5 minutes, Eds maintained possession and even had scoring opportunities. This was an entirely new Eds compared to previous years. Every single player on the field was battling as if it were the last tie they would ever play. The eagles continued this attack for a good period, and then DJ Jones a junior was called off sides and his goal disallowed yet the Eagle student section continued to roar. It was a sign that this game was not only winnable, but at that moment they were ahead and had the momentum. This continued and the eagles and a few more chances, but their momentum came to a halt after multiple Ignatius free kicks on goal. From that point on, Ignatius took control of the game, but the half ended, and the game remained scoreless.
The second half began and the back and forth between the teams continued but most notably Ignatius offense and the eagles defense. Though the wild cats kept up the offensive, they failed to score but had shot after shot. The eagle’s back line had an outstanding performance consisting of sophomores Sean Davis and Will Lavelle, junior Jack Pofok, and senior captain Conner Burg as well as keeper William Day. These players refused to let Ignatius score, and they were able to hold off the nationally ranked team for 60 minutes until the cats broke through with a header in the 60th minute. With 20 minutes remaining in the game, the eagles’ hope for a win was dwindling. The eagles fought, but they came up short with a 1-0 loss. Even though the eagles lost the student section still cheered for their team as if they had achieved greatness. Even though they lost, it was the best Eds vs Ignatius soccer game they had played in the past three years.
The eagles now move on to next season ready to battle. They are excited to fight the cats in the backyard, not only wanting to defend their home but wanting to win.
