SEHS Hockey: Eagles fall to Holy Name
February 23rd, 2019
The St. Edward hockey team came into Saturday’s matchup as the #3 seed in the Brooklyn Region, having already beat Avon and Avon Lake, outscoring them a combined 19-0. The Holy Name Green Wave came off a 5-3 comeback win against Rocky River. Holy Name and St. Edward met earlier in the season in which St. Edward won 2-1, and in the GLHL Cup in which Holy Name won 6-3.
Holy Name led the game 1-0 for almost the whole game. The Green Wave scored a goal in the middle of the first period and held strong after. The Eagles had multiple power-play chances but just could not find the back of the net. Holy Name scored a breakaway goal with about 2 minutes left in the game to seal the win. The Green Wave will play St. Ignatius next week in the district final.
The St. Edward Hockey Team finishes the season with a record of 28-8-2-1, compiling wins over highly regarded programs in Ohio, including Gilmour Academy, University School and Olentangy Liberty (3 times). The Eagles won the Padua Tournament at OBM arena and competed at a few other tournaments in Canada. Seniors Charlie Kirkholder, Tyler Budzar, Joey Corrigan and Ryan Willse will be missed next year. The future is bright for the St. Edward Hockey Team, as much of the team will consist of the Class of 2021 and 2022 next year. As seniors next year, Nate Cappellazzo, Matty Smith and Joe Wilbur look to lead the team to another great regular season and a deep playoff run.
