We are back! After an eventful winter break for St. Edward Athletics, the Eagle hoopers started off the second half of the season with the HOLY WAR.

Riding an impressive 5-game winning streak heading into last Friday’s home matchup against the Wildcats, the Eagles had a lot of momentum after some early struggles in December. St. Ignatius was also taking a two-game winning streak into the game.

The Eagles jumped out to a great start against the Wildcats, taking a 26-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. Midway through the second, the Wildcats were able to cut the lead down to 10 points, with a score of 40-30. However, the Eagles surged back before halftime, taking an 18-point lead of 48-30 which was highlighted by Meechie Terry’s deep buzzer-beating three.

The Eagles did not turn back in the second half. Great basketball from all of the Eagles helped them to defeat the Wildcats with a final score of 87-64. Meechie Terry got the crowd roaring with a pair of dunks in the second half, including the monster alley-oop slam dunk passed by Grant Huffman from behind the arc (see video here).

The Eagle’s Nest was at full capacity for this one, contributing to an energizing atmosphere (see video here). With the classic denim theme for the Eagles, the student section was loud and fired up all game! With that exciting rivalry win against the Wildcats, the Eagles advanced to 9-3, stretching a 6-game winning streak.

The Eagles play next in the Burger King Classic tournament next Friday and Saturday in Erie, PA. Branded as the best four-team tournament in the nation, the Eagles will play Kennedy Catholic (PA)  on Friday, and either Erie Cathedral Prep or Plymouth Whitemarsh (PA) on Saturday. This tournament will surely be a great challenge for the Eagles, and hopefully, it will continue to shape the Eagles into a better team for March!

GO EAGLES!
