Fire Up Monday (No. 6)
December 10, 2018
Monday, December 10th
Note: As the Varsity Basketball Team Manager, I will be continuing this column mostly with coverage of Eagle Basketball, as well as limited coverage of Eagle Wrestling and Hockey.
Last Monday, the Eagle Hoopers started off their season on a good note with a 28-point victory against Lakewood at the Eagle’s Nest. This past Saturday, the Eagles advanced to 2-0 against Toledo St. John, who the Eagles had not beaten in 4 years.
After a strong first quarter, filled with great Eagle defense and accentuated with a Meechie Terry slam dunk, the Eagles led by 12 points. However, St. John’s started to get hot beyond the three-point arc, and they cut the lead to 3 points midway through the second quarter. The Eagles responded with a few steals, a three-pointer, and a buzzer-beating layup by Grant Huffman to stretch the lead to 14 at the half. St. John’s fought back in an attempt to stay in the game, but the Eagles pulled through in the second half. St. John’s could not keep up with the high powered Eagle offense, as their shots did not connect as they had in the first half. The Eagles won 69-51. They play next in the Kewpee Holiday Classic at Lima High School this Friday and Saturday; opponent and time of game are TBA. Hopefully, the Eagles can continue to improve as they gear up for the challenging Beach Ball Classic Tournament in Myrtle Beach over Christmas Break. The Eagles do not have another home game until January 11th, when they take on St. Ignatius.
The Eagle Wrestlers competed in the Walsh Jesuit Ironman Tournament over the weekend. This is one of the best wrestling tournaments across America, and many Eagles did well. Oklahoma-commit Sam Dover ‘19 won in his weight class; congratulations to him on that major achievement!
December 20th is a date that Eagles fans should mark on their calendars: both the Eagle hockey and wrestling squads take on the Wildcats of St. Ignatius. The wrestling Holy War will be held at St. Ignatius, while the hockey Holy War will be held at Winterhurst Ice Rink. Be there!
GO EAGLES!
