The Eagles stay alive! Your St. Edward footballers defeated Euclid last Friday in the regional semifinals with a score of 56-35. But, let me tell you, the game was much closer than the score shows. Late in the second quarter, the Eagles took a 14 point lead after Garrett Dzuro threw a bomb to MacKenzie Wainwright for a 60-yard score. Euclid responded with a quick touchdown drive to cut the lead to 28-14 at halftime.
After going back and forth in the third quarter, Euclid responded first with a game-tying touchdown. The Eagle fans were quiet, but we knew that we were going to respond; that is exactly what happened. On the ensuing drive, Jordan Castleberry ran for a 13-yard touchdown. Then, on Euclid’s following possession, Deeb Alawan recovered a fumble to get the ball back for the Eagles. Dzuro then ran in a 15-yard touchdown. Just like that, the Eagles took a 14 point lead and controlled the game from there.
The conditions for the game were rather frigid, as snow fell for the majority of the second half. However, that did not stop the Eagle student section from being loud and bringing the energy; some even braved the cold and went shirtless for the fourth quarter. (Check out the student section here).
With this win, the Eagles earned a spot in the regional finals against Mentor at Euclid’s new stadium this Friday at 7 P.M. The Eagles will be extra motivated for this game, as Mentor won the last two times they faced off with the Eagles. I am sure the Eagles will have laser focus this week., and we will be ready to take on Mentor.
Make sure to get your tickets this week in the athletics office, as this game will likely be a sell-out! You won’t want to miss this one!
GO EAGLES!
