Eagle Cagers on to the Final Four! by Logan Leduc ’17
March 24, 2017
Eagle basketball is back! Led by captains Tommy Schmock, Kelvin Calhoun, and Jack Sullivan the Eagles find themselves playing for a chance to be in the State Championship game. While everyone doubted them, they didn’t care. They simply kept playing. While everyone judged them for being too inexperienced with three freshmen on the team, they didn’t care. They simply kept proving everyone wrong. It’s safe to say that no one believed in this team except for this team. The support of the St. Edward community here in the playoffs has been unbelievable and the Eagles will need more of the same as they take on Massillon Jackson tonight at 8:30 in the State Semi-Final matchup.
The Eagles have come this far, no sense in losing now. Massillon Jackson brings with them Butler commit Kyle Young and Toledo commit Logan Hill. They have propelled Jackson to a 26-2 record and have been the favorite to win it all the past three years despite this being their first Final Four appearance in that three year span. Despite Jackson having the big names, we can count on the fact that the Eagles’ depth is hard to stop. Demetrius “Meechie” Terry, Emmett Chambers, and Will Henry have been the highlights off of the bench. This being said, the Eagles are capable of going 10 or 11 deep any given game. Freshmen Grant Huffman and Devontae Blanton have shown they’re more than capable of playing at the Varsity level as they have started all playoff long. The flat guarantee is that we have the best coach in the world.
Coach Flannery is entering his 10th Final Four of his coaching tenure. Fresh off of his 400th career win, he would like to have wins 401 and 402 this weekend to win his 3rd state title.
If you’re not in Columbus, get to Columbus! Jackson will have their whole town and we need ours! Tip off is set for 8:30 tonight in Value City Arena on the Campus of the Ohio State University. Winner advances to the State title game!
