Eagle Cagers Playing for a Trip to Columbus by Max DiGiacomo 18

The Saint Edward basketball team is set to face off against Garfield Heights tonight at 7 at the Wolstein Center with a trip to Columbus on the line. The Eagles have been dominant in the playoffs thus far, with dominant wins over rival Saint Ignatius and also the Mentor Cardinals. The win over Saint Ignatius greatly helped the confidence of the Eagles based on the game against Mentor. Mentor got off to a big lead in the 1st half of the game on Wednesday at CSU. The Cardinals were red hot from the three point line early on, but the Eagles never let up. The game ended up being 30-28 at halftime, despite being down 23-9 at one point in the game.

The Eagles have shown why they are so dangerous in the last couple games. They have had a very balanced attack, shooting well from the three point line and also using their big bodies in the paint. Against Saint Ignatius, the Eagles shut down the Wildcat bigs, something that Coach Flannery stressed to the team going into the game. The Eagles are a very deep team, playing 10 to 11 players with confidence.  The team has a good mix of experience and youth. Senior point guard Tommy Schmock leads the attack for the eagles, with three point bomber Jack Sullivan to compliment him.  Big men Kelvin Calhoun and Will Henry have given the Eagles an interior presence that need improvement last season. Grant Huffman and Demetrius Terry have made the Eagles very versatile and tough for opponents to defend against. The Eagles have the makings of a very good team, but the success of the team’s season will rely on the results of Saturday’s game against Garfield  and beyond in Columbus for a possible final 4.

Let’s get out to CSU tonight to see our Eagles to Columbus, Eagle fans!
