Eagle Cagers Take 3rd at Under Armor Holiday Classic by Max DiGiacomo ‘18

The Eagle basketball team took 3rd place in their tournament in San Diego over Christmas break. The Eagles got off to a hot start in the opening round of the tournament against Saint Francis, Maryland. They took control of the game early on and never let up against Saint Francis. Senior Jack Sullivan finished with 22 points with 6 threes made in the game. Tommy Schmock also added a solid 18 points for the Eagles. In their second game, the Eagles faced off against the host team Torrey Pines. Much like their first game, St. Ed’s never had to sweat against Torrey Pines. Eagles had a very balanced attack throughout the game, everyone was getting involved and it was a total team effort. In the semifinal game of the tournament, the Eagles faced off against the #1 team in San Diego, Foothills Christian. It was a tight contest throughout the 1st half, but Foothills started to pull away early in the 3rd quarter and won the game. Foothills’ top player Jalen Hands, a UCLA commit, finished with 42 points against the Eagles. In the 3rd place game, the Eagles faced off against Redemption Christian. It was a tight game, with Redemption up 3 going into halftime. Shots started to fall in the second half for St. Ed’s, and the Eagles came out victorious, 83-79. Schmock had another solid game, putting up 27 for the Eagles. Schmock made the all-tournament team with his intense effort and overall play. It was a great bonding experience for the Eagles as they prepare to take on some tough local teams in the coming weeks. This weekend includes away games at St. Vincent St. Mary, Benedictine, and a tournament game Sunday versus Brunswick. The Eagles are set to play away against rival Saint Ignatius next Friday January 13.
