With Arizona falling to California last weekend, only two teams remain undefeated in college basketball. The top ranked Syracuse Orange stand at a school record 22-0 while the number 4 Wichita State Shockers have an impressive 24-0 record. Which team gets through the regular season undefeated? Syracuse has more quality wins than the Shockers but, Wichita State will be the team to finish the season unscathed. College basketball is full of thrilling close games, acrobatic dunks and intimidating student sections so anything can happen; that’s the beauty of the sport. So let’s take a closer look at the remaining regular season schedules of each team.
#1 Syracuse Orange (22-0)
Games Remaining: 9 (4 home and 5 away)
Toughest Game Ahead: @ Duke Feb. 22
#4 Wichita State Shockers (24-0)
Games Remaining: 7 (3 home and 4 away)
Toughest Game Ahead: vs. Missouri State Mar.1
Head to head, the odds are already against Syracuse who have 2 more games than Wichita left to play in the regular season. The ACC, as a whole, is a better conference with better teams compared to the Missouri Valley Conference. Syracuse also has three remaining games versus current ranked opponents and all of these games are on the road. Wichita State only has one game versus a team with a record above .500 (Missouri State) at home. The Shockers also win by an average of 17 points at home. The odds of the Shockers slipping up now are slim to none. As for the Orang,e it would not be surprising to see 2, even 3 losses before the season is over. Syracuse may be the better team but they will not finish this season perfect. But don’t worry, Syracuse fanatics, the last time a team went through the entire season undefeated and won a championship was in 1976. A loss or two does not jeopardize the Orange’s chances at making the tournament it’s just part of the sport.
